HONOLULU — Defense Secretary Robert Gates has nominated a new commander for the Marine Corps in the Pacific.
Lt. Gen. Duane Thiessen is currently the Marines’ deputy commandant for programs and resources at the Pentagon.
He was commanding general of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Japan when a helicopter crashed on the campus of Okinawa International University in 2004.
The campus was closed at the time and no one was killed.
Even so, the incident fueled an uproar that led to a 2006 agreement to close the base and revise flight patterns.
Thiessen would replace Lt. Gen. Keith Stalder if the U.S. Senate confirms his nomination.
Thiessen has also commanded U.S. Marine Forces Korea, Marine Aircraft Group 13 and an attack training squadron.
