OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A 21-year-old Marine died and another Marine was critically injured Thursday after their car plowed through a guard rail and went into a ravine near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
The Marines, in a yellow Mazda 3 sedan, were traveling west along a stretch of Carroll Canyon Road that dead-ends at a ravine in the Mira Mesa neighborhood, according to San Diego police.
The sedan went through a medal guard rail, rolled over and landed on its hood in a culvert. The driver and passenger were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla after emergency crews pulled both from the vehicle. The passenger was pronounced dead an hour later, and the driver was listed in critical condition.
Police did not identify the driver or passenger, but did say the passenger was stationed at Miramar with Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38.
