A Marine staff noncommissioned officer died Tuesday night from wounds suffered last week in Afghanistan, according to media reports.
Gunnery Sgt. Robert Gilbert was shot in the head during an ambush March 8 and evacuated to Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland, where he eventually died, according to a report in the Akron, Ohio, Beacon Journal.
The Defense Department has not confirmed Gilbert’s death as of Wednesday afternoon, and his unit information was not immediately available.
Gilbert, who turned 28 years old Tuesday, was on his fifth combat deployment, friends told the newspaper.
As of Wednesday, more than 4,600 people had become members of a Facebook page chronicling the Marine’s recovery.
