Death of Pendleton Marine under investigation

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Authorities are investigating the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who was found unresponsive in his off-base apartment Sunday.

Sgt. Nicholas J. Smith, 25, was a warehouse clerk with Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, officials said in a statement Tuesday.

Smith, a native of Chicago, enlisted in July 2002 and had deployed to Iraq. His military awards and decorations include the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
