Gates taps maj. gens. for third star

The Marine Corps will gain two more three-star generals with the promotions announced Thursday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates
Maj. Gen. Robert E. Schmidle Jr., assistant deputy commandant for programs and resources at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., was nominated for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy commander of U.S. Cyber Command.
Cyber Command was launched in May and is a sub-unified command subordinate to U.S. Strategic Command.
Maj. Gen. John E. Wissler, deputy commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was also nominated for a third star and for appointment as deputy commandant for programs and resources, replacing Schmidle.
