Commissaries get Milks as acting director

Thomas Milks has been named acting director of the Defense Commissary Agency following the June 30 retirement of DeCA director Philip Sakowitz, commissary officials announced.

Milks has served as deputy director and chief operating officer of the commissary agency since August after serving almost two years as the director of DeCA Europe. Clifford Stanley, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, announced the appointment Thursday.

The process for choosing a new permanent DeCA director began in April when Sakowitz announced his plans to retire, and there is no information on when the process will be completed, according to an announcement from commissary officials.

Milks began his commissary career in 1977 as an intern with the U.S. Army Troop Support Agency, which was later consolidated with the other services’ commissary systems into one agency — DeCA.

He was DeCA’s director of sales from May 2006 to July 2007, and has been a deputy region director for the east and west regions.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1976 from Virginia Tech.
