Discharged Marine gets life in death of dad

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A discharged Marine has been sentenced to life in prison for slaying his father on Christmas Day in 2007.
A Montgomery County Circuit Court judge sentenced David Winters, now 21, on Thursday. Winters was convicted of first-degree murder in January 2009.
Prosecutors say Winters was on holiday leave from the Marine Corps, having just completed basic training, when he fatally stabbed his father multiple times while taking a walk with his dad near his parents’ home in Rockville.
Winters told police a group of people attacked his father, but police and prosecutors said Winters had purchased the hunting knife used in the murder and inquired about his father’s self-defense ability.
