An Osprey pilot based in California was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday, the Marine Corps reported.

Capt. Russell G. Hill, 32, of Ocala, Fla., was an Afghanistan combat veteran assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 165 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

Hill was riding a Ducati motorcycle along Route 76 in a rural part of northern San Diego County and ran off the road at a curve, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP was investigating the crash but police believe he was driving above the posted speed limit, which in that area is 25 mph.

Hill joined the Marine Corps in November 1999 and completed two combat deployments to Afghanistan in 2008 and 2010.
