Lejeune lance corporal killed in Afghanistan

A North Carolina-based Marine was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Thursday.

Lance Cpl. Edward J. Dycus, 22, of Greenville, Miss., died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

This incident is under investigation, the Pentagon said in the statement.

According to news reports, a Marine was shot and killed Wednesday by an Afghan soldier in Helmand province.
