Are sergeants in the infantry squad-leader role being overtaxed as battlefield needs expand along with rapidly-evolving conflicts?

Lt. Col. Daniel Wittman, who heads the ground combat element for the Marines’ Plans, Policies and Operations office, is worried that may be the case.

“How do we shape the force to not overload the assistant squad leader or squad leader?” he asked Thursday at the annual Modern Day Marine expo in Quantico, Virginia.
