Search efforts for a Marine who went missing last week while swimming off the coast of Tinian were suspended Wednesday morning.

Lt. William White, of Coast Guard Sector Guam, yesterday said the search for Cpl. Donovan E. Clancy, 26, of Marine Wing Communication Squadron 18, based in Okinawa, Japan, was suspended pending new developments.

Clancy went missing last Friday. The search lasted five days.

White said Clancy was in the ocean water "cooling off after a workout" and was possibly caught in a rip tide. He was reported to be with friends — other Marines — at the time, White said.

A press release from the Marine Corps issued on Saturday stated that Clancy was "wading in heavy surf conditions" on the northwest shore of Tinian.

White said the search covered 1,714 square miles. Local authorities and Marines searched the coastline of Tinian.

Over the course of the five-day search, boats, aircraft and personnel from the Coast Guard, Navy, Marines and local authorities were used.

Marine Corps Capt. Laura Pattawi said the missing service member was involved in Forager Fury III, a military exercise involving Marine units from Japan that began last week and is scheduled to end Oct. 7.

The Marine Corps-led exercise involves about 1,300 service members, according to the military.
