A North Carolina-based Marine died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound appears to have committed suicide Saturday at a local gun range, according to investigating authorities.

Lance Cpl. Joshua Gillam, 20, an ammunition technician with 2nd Supply Battalion based at Camp Lejeune, is believed to have shot himself at the Flatwoods Outfitters Gun Range in Hubert, said Chris Thomas, the major with the Onslow Country Sheriff's Department investigative division.

Gillam was transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center via helicopter, where he died of his wounds, according to a Marine news release that did not detail his cause of death.

Thomas said while the investigation is still active, Gillam's injury "has been determined to be self-inflicted."

Flatwoods Outfitters Gun Range is about 20 miles from Camp Lejeune.

It was not immediately apparent what prompted the tragedy, but no additional people were injured or involved in the incident, according to a statement released by Capt. Ryan Alvis, a public affairs officer with II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Gillam joined the service in March 2014. His decorations including the Global War on Terror Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
