Marine Corps officials have identified the corporal who died on Thursday morning during a hike at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Cpl. Alexis Aaron Alcaraz, a 22-year-old field radio operator assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, lost consciousness just before 6:30 a.m. on Thursday during a conditioning hike at Camp Lejeune. He was transported to the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:47 a.m.

His death remains under investigation, according to Marine officials.

Alcaraz, of Sacramento, California, joined the Marine Corps in June 2012. He never deployed and was previously based at Camp Pendleton and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in California, and Okinawa, Japan.
