WILMINGTON, N.C. — Police say a Wilmington man who was a sergeant in the Marine Reserve strangled his estranged girlfriend before killing himself earlier this week.

Wilmington Police Detective Lee Odham tells local media that the results of an autopsy confirm that 23-year-old Rebecca Jones was strangled. Jones was a student at Cape Fear Community College and grew up in Rindge, New Hampshire.

Authorities say that Justin Hakeem Walker, 26, of Wilmington died after shooting himself in the head around 2:30 p.m. Monday at a shooting range. A note left at the scene said authorities would find his girlfriend dead in his apartment.

Wilmington police later found Jones' body.

Odham says a second note written by Walker and found with Jones' body indicated Walker was upset because the couple was breaking up.
