More than 1,500 Marines will have to wait until the new year to find out if they have been promoted to master sergeant or first sergeant, Corps officials said.

The promotion board that was supposed to select Marines to advance to E-8 and E-9 was abruptly dismissed on Dec. 12 before it could finish its work, MARADMIN 679/17 says.

“Following an investigation into a potential irregularity during the conduct of the E-8 portion of the FY18 Sergeant Major through Master Sergeant promotion selection board, the Commandant of the Marine Corps directed the board be reconstituted with new members, who will meet in 2018 to conduct the E-8 portion,” said Maj. Garron Garn, a spokesman for Manpower & Reserve Affairs.

Garn declined to specify what the irregularity was. The new promotion board will convene on Jan. 8 and is expected to take several weeks, he said. It will select 1,003 Marines to advance to E-8, of which 185 will be new first sergeants.

Military.com first reported on Monday about the delay in E-8 promotions.

None of the Marines whom the board promoted to sergeant major and master gunnery sergeant during the E-9 portion of the process are affected by the irregularity, Garn said.
