Corps officials identified a Marine who was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive in the vicinity of his barracks on Friday at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Lance Cpl. Ricardo A. Rodriguez Jr., 25, assigned to Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines. Rodriguez, an armory custodian, was declared dead by medical officials at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune at 7:12 a.m. after being discovered unconscious by unit personnel about 90 minutes earlier t approximately 5:45 a.m.

The cause of his death remains under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, according to Marine Corps officials.

Rodriguez, who entered active duty Jan. 23, 2012, had just returned in July from a deployment with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force–Crisis Response–Africa. He had previously deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.

His awards included a Combat Action Ribbon, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

Rodriguez's death marks the second fatality at Camp Lejeune in a two-day period last week.

Cpl. Alexis Aaron Alcaraz, 22, serving with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, died Thursday after collapsing during a training hike. Alcaraz's death is also under investigation.
