The bodies of a Marine Corps veteran and his girlfriend were found Monday night in a sugar cane field in Chan Chen village in the Corozal district of Belize, according to reports. Drew DeVoursney and Francesca Matus vanished in Belize after a night out with friends, both with plans to return home, DeVoursney to Atlanta and Matus to Canada, Fox 5 Atlanta reports.

No one heard from them since last Tuesday, according to his mother Char DeVoursney and the only lead was Matus’ white 1998 Isuzu Rodeo that was found about 10 miles from the bar. She told Fox 5 Atlanta that "even as a combat Marine in Iraq, her son stayed in touch with his family."

"That's the hardest part. It's just that we don't know anything. We don't know where he is or what's going on," Char DeVoursney told local ABC News affiliate WSB-TV of Atlanta, before the two were found.

According to his official military personnel file, obtained by Marine Corps Times, Cpl. DeVoursney entered active duty at Charlotte, North Carolina, and served from November 2003 until November 2011 as a data network specialist. He deployed twice to Iraq, the first time in 2004, and a second time in 2006. His last assignment was with the 11 Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton in California.

During his service he was awarded several awards, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation.

Timothy Brandon Barfield, who served with DeVoursney in the Marines, set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to hire a private investigator. "With your support, Drew's family and I would like to raise money to hire a private investigation firm to investigate Drew's disappearance and death," Barfield wrote. So far, he has raised $8,300.
