Investigators are looking into the death of an East Coast staff noncommissioned officer with four combat deployments who was found dead Aug. 27 in Beulaville, North Carolina.

Staff Sgt. Cody Smith, 33, was based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, according to a news release from II Marine Expeditionary Force. Details about Smith's death were not immediately available.

Smith completed two combat deployments to Iraq and another two deployments to Afghanistan after joining the Marine Corps in June 2001, the news release said. He made staff sergeant in April 2012 and was serving as a platoon sergeant at the time of his death.

Originally from Rutherford County, Tennessee, Smith's military awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Combat Instructor Ribbon, NATO Medal- ISAF Afghanistan and NATO Medal-NATO Operations and Activities in Relation to Libya.
