Planned maintenance work at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma's airfield in Okinawa, Japan, is scheduled to start this week, Marine Corps officials said.

The revitalization work, necessary to fix the airfield's deterioration and ensure safety, is set to begin Jan. 5. according to a news release.

MCAS Futenma will still support operations for tiltrotor and rotary-wing aircraft during the renovations, but fixed-wing operations will be moved to another U.S. facility about ten miles away at Kadena Air Force base, according to the news release.

The revitalization will support the sustainment of the airfield, used by III Marine Expeditionary Force.

For years, the U.S. military and the Japanese government have talked about moving MCAS Futenma because Okinawan locals oppose the facility, which is located in an urban area.
