NORTHFIELD, Vt. — A Taiwanese woman has filed a lawsuit against a private military college in Vermont, alleging the school wouldn't hire her to teach Chinese because she's a woman.

The Times-Argus reports that Ya-Chen Chen's federal complaint filed this month says she was passed over for a teaching position at Norwich University. Chen applied in 2012 and says the school hired a Chinese man who was "objectively less qualified" than she was for the job.

The complaint says the reason the school gave for hiring the man— that he had better student evaluations — is false.

Chen is seeking to be hired for the position as well as back pay.

Norwich didn't comment on the suit, but pointed out that 62 percent of its assistant and associate vice presidents are women.
