An AH-1Z Viper helicopter made an unplanned landing on Ikei Island in Okinawa on Friday after the pilots received a cockpit warning indication, according to III Marine Expeditionary Force.

No one was hurt and the helicopter was not damaged when the pilots safely landed the aircraft on an isolated paved road at 7:30 p.m. local time, a III MEF news release says. The Viper belongs to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267.

"We are working closely with Okinawan authorities to secure the site in order to protect both the aircraft and the local community," the news release says. "We request that the public respect the barriers in place for their own safety, and to better enable us to remove the aircraft as quickly as possible."

Friday's event comes after two incidents on the same day last month in Okinawa. One MV-22B Osprey crashed in shallow waters off Okinawa on Dec. 13 after its rotor struck a refueling line.

That same day, another MV-22B had to land on reinforced cushions at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma when its landing gear failed.
