A Marine stationed in Okinawa has been hospitalized after he was hit while moving a local civilian out of traffic after a car crash, defense officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Master Sgt. Hector Trujillo arrived at Naval Medical Center San Diego on Sunday. A Marine Corps spokeswoman confirmed that Trujillo had been struck by a car but declined to elaborate on what happened because the incident is under investigation. Trujillo remains hospitalized and his medical condition continues to be monitored.

According to an online fundraiser to raise money for his family’s travel expenses, Trujillo is in a medically induced coma after suffering a fractured spine and injuries to his neck and spine.

His wife posted on Facebook that he was driving to PT with his Marines at 5 a.m. on Friday when he saw a civilian’s car crash on the expressway.

“He could have been oblivious to it and continue on his way to work, but NO! he of course didn’t do that,” Maria Carrillo Trujillo posted on Facebook. “He followed his heart and he pulled over to assist and help.

Trujillo has been in the Marine Corps for more than 20 years, and is devoted both to his family and his Marines, his wife wrote in an email to Marine Corps Times. He has three children, and also takes pride in helping his Marines succeed.

“He loves to motivate, inspire and guide them to self-mastery and self-discipline, not only in the military career but in their private lives too,” Maria Carrillo Trujillo wrote in the email.
