A U.S. Marine who was arrested in Australia earlier this month after allegedly dragging a 60-year-old woman from her car will be remaining in the country for the foreseeable future.

Taylor Wyatt Elwood, 20, appeared in front of the Brisbane Magistrate Court for the first time July 18, during which time he received approval to return to his unit’s barracks on July 31, the Brisbane Times reported.

The Marine from Marine Rotational Force - Darwin will not, however, be permitted to leave Australia just yet, as the magistrate approved bail under the condition that he stay away from international departure points.

Elwood was arrested on July 3 and charged for the serious assault of a person over 60, assault on an off-duty police officer who attempted to intervene in the melee and for causing damage to the woman’s car. He’s been held in “very strict confines” by his unit, Elwood’s legal representation told the Brisbane Times.

The woman, who works for the Australian Defence Force, required medical attention after sustaining “serious” but non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released from the hospital, the report said.

Elwood’s next appearance in court is scheduled for Aug. 8.
