Commissary officials are asking customers at stateside commissaries for patience in the aftermath of the three-day government shutdown.

Although the stores hadn’t yet shut down when a deal was reached, they were preparing to do so at the end of the business day Jan. 24. To make that happen, they began reducing their stocks of perishables such as meat and produce during the shutdown.

“For the patrons of our stores where we were preparing to close down, we ask for their patience as product delivery schedules return to normal,” said retired Navy Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, interim director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency, in an announcement.

Overseas stores weren’t set to close during the shutdown, nor were stores in five remote U.S. areas: Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center Bridgeport and Fort Irwin in California; Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak and Fort Greely in Alaska; and Dugway Proving Ground, Utah.
