A candidate for Utica, New York, Common Council resigned from the race after admitting that he falsely claimed to be a Marine Corps veteran, according to the Utica Observer-Dispatch.

Allen Thayer Sr. claimed to have served in the Marine Corps in a news release announcing his candidacy.

Thayer was running for the second district seat in Utica, New York.

In a letter renouncing his candidacy, Thayer said that he had “lied and I can’t do anything to take that back.”

“I have embarrassed myself, my family and the City of Utica Republican Party,” Thayer wrote in his resignation letter, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reported. “And finally I apologize to all veterans that have served our great country.”
