Investigators are looking into the Sept. 20 death of Marine Staff Sgt. Joshua Lorencz, who was assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Dam Neck in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Lorencz, 25, died at an off-site medical facility, said Training and Education Command spokesman Capt. Joshua Pena, who was unable to provide any information on the cause of death while the investigation is ongoing.

“My husband was a great man who put all before himself,” his wife Lexie told Marine Corps Times. “Our time together was cut short but he will always be with me. It was made very obvious this weekend that he touched so many lives during his Marine Corps career, doing exactly what he loved. He will forever be missed.”

After completing boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in 2011, Lorencz deployed to Afghanistan and later spent three years stationed in Okinawa, according to his obituary from Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Lorencz served as an intelligence instructor and was also a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program instructor who held a black belt and had recently been accepted to the seven-week instructor trainer course at the Martial Arts Center of Excellence in Quantico, Virginia, the obituary says.

In addition to his wife, Lorencz is survived by his father David, his mother Melissa Draper, his stepmother Ginger, and his brothers Brian, Joshua and Matthew, the obituary says.

His military awards are listed as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal – ISAF, Afghanistan, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, a letter of appreciation, certificate of appreciation and a certificate of commendation, according to the Marine Corps.
