A Marine based at Camp Pendleton, California, was killed in an off-base accident that is under investigation, a Corps official confirmed.

Lance Cpl. Mark Huff died after being struck by a car near California State Route 78 on Oct. 20, WHIO TV in Dayton, Ohio, first reported on Friday. Huff was born in Wilmington, Ohio, where funeral services will be held on Saturday.

Huff arrived at Parris Island, South Carolina, in January 2016 and went on to become a motor transportation operator with the 1st Marine Logistics Group, said 1st Lt. Adam Miller, a spokesman for 1st MLG. During his time in the Corps, Huff received the Global War on Terrorism Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Miller said he was unable to provide any information on where and how Huff died because the matter is under investigation.

“We’re saddened by the loss of a fellow Marine, Lance Cpl. Mark Huff, and our condolences go out to his family and friends,” Miller said. “Please respect his family’s privacy and allow them time to grieve.”
