A Marine was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday in Kailua, Hawaii, according to Marine Corps officials.

The Marine Corps on Monday identified the 21-year-old victim as Lance Cpl. Austin Cahill.

Cahill was a machine gunner with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines based out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, according to a press release.

“Austin Cahill thoroughly enjoyed being a U.S. Marine and we were lucky to have him in our battalion,” Lt. Col. Eric Meador, Cahill’s battalion commander said in the release. “He was well liked and respected for his experience. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

KHON2 reported that the Marine had lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail.

A native of Tampa Bay, Florida, Cahill joined the Hawaii-based unit in 2016 after graduating from the School of Infantry.

The junior Marine had one deployment to Okinawa, Japan, in 2017 as part of forward-deployed forces, according to the Marine Corps.

His awards include the Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
