The Marine Corps has identified the Marine who drowned Sunday in Okinawa as Lance Cpl. Sebastian Borja-Diaz, a motor vehicle operator with the 3rd Transportation Support Battalion.
Borja-Diaz,21, was pronounced dead on Sunday, only a day after another Marine drowned in Okinawa.
His battalion is "deeply saddened" by his death, said Lt. Col. Andre Ingram, commander of the 3rd Transportation Support Battalion.
"He was devoted to his job and his fellow Marines and worked diligently to set an example to be emulated by them," Ingram said in a statement. "The entire unit mourns his loss."
Borja-Diaz joined the Marine Corps on May 18, 2015 and his military awards and decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, according to III Marine Expeditionary Force.
A command investigation is looking into the cause of Borja-Diaz' death, III MEF spokesman 2nd Lt. Jacky Chow said in the news release.
Borja-Diaz' death comes one day after the apparent drowning of Sgt. Aubrey Williams, of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. The back-to-back drowning incidents have prompted III MEF to temporarily ban swimming and other water recreational activities.
